Ultra-slim, light and with almost 12 hours of battery, this 17-inch laptop is perfect for office work, alongside any creative side projects you might want to indulge in.

Best budget 17-inch laptop

LENOVO IdeaPad 3i 17.3" Laptop - Intel® Celeron®, 128 GB SSD, BlueLenovo
Price: £259 (was £379)

www.currys.co.uk

Unquestionably on the cheaper side, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3i is perfect for those in need of a reliable 17-inch laptop, all for less than £300.

Bright visuals and a clean design: the Lenovo IdeaPad 3i's HD+ picture is a step above most typical laptops below £300, and its narrow bezels give users the most out of a true 17-inch laptop screen. This 17-inch laptop is certainly on the larger side, which is excellent for those who seek new levels of multitasking capabilities and immersion, but might be a little cumbersome if you're lugging it back and forth to the office.

As for performance, the IdeaPad 3i is suitable for smaller, less demanding tasks such as document write-ups and Excel spreadsheets, but for more demanding tasks, you're going to run into some trouble. At 4GB of RAM and a fairly basic Intel Celeron 6305 CPU, this laptop isn't built for gaming, nor heavy-duty editing.

That being said, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3i is exceptionally priced and is the perfect laptop for students and office workers alike, it's a bargain at its price.

Pros

  • Excellent value 17-inch laptop
  • Rapid SSD storage
  • Solid, comfortable design

Cons

  • Fairly weak RAM leads to some sluggishness

Best 17-inch gaming laptop

A phenomenal combination of top-tier hardware, the MSI Katana 17-inch gaming laptop is the ultimate decision for next-generation gaming on the go.

With the latest 40-series Nvidia graphics card, 16GB of RAM and a stellar 13th generation Intel i7 CPU onboard, all supported with 1TB of SSD storage, the MSI Katana is a mindblowing gaming laptop worth every penny.

As for its display, the 17-inch full-HD screen is visually stunning, with deep colours, an ultra-quick 144Hz refresh rate and tiny bezels for getting the most out of your money. This gaming laptop is one-of-a-kind for its price and is otherwise uncontested on the laptop market for sheer value.

If we were to nitpick, however, we'd certainly point out the MSI Katana's four-hour battery life, which seems particularly low amongst a selection of much cheaper laptops that are far more enduring. With gaming laptops, however, this is to be expected: powerful hardware requires plenty of power, and a power-hungry 40-series laptop will drain the life out of any machine.

Truly exceptional, the MSI Katana is perhaps one of the best gaming laptops on the market right now at its price, for playing AAA games and anything in between, this is the device for you.

Pros

  • Top-tier hardware for unbeatable gaming performance
  • Great, comfortable design
  • Gorgeous 144Hz full HD screen

Cons

  • Fairly weak battery life

Best laptop under £600

Certainly one of the cheaper 17-inch laptops on the market, but also one of the most powerful for its price, the Lenovo V17 laptop offers great hardware at a reasonable price, making it perhaps the perfect laptop for working from home, or relaxing in the evening.

Beautifully designed, this sturdy laptop also happens to be quite light, making it suitable for taking to and from the office. Equipped with a full-size keyboard, operating this particularly large laptop is a comfortable breeze.

If we were to nitpick, we'd love to see more RAM onboard the Lenovo V17, 8GB is a standard amongst laptops of this price, but just a little more would see this laptop easily reach the top of our list, but as it stands, it's a workhorse nonetheless.

Pros

  • Stunning design
  • Excellent vibrant screen
  • Solid performance

Cons

  • Standard 8GB offers satisfactory performance, but nothing exceptional

Best laptop for editing

A truly next-level laptop, the LG gram is part of a new generation of ultra-light laptops with plenty of power to tackle even the most demanding of computing tasks.

Equipped with an array of terrific hardware, including an Nvidia 3050 GPU, 15GB of RAM, and a breathtaking Intel i7-1360p CPU, it's truly a mystery as to how the LG gram is as light as it is, clocking in around 1.35 kg.

At over £1,200, the LG Gram certainly isn't for the faint of heart: it's an expensive laptop to be sure, and its specifications struggle to rival gaming laptops of equal value. That being said, with LG, you're paying for more than performance it's the slick, effortless quality of the LG gram that's just so appealing, and with up to 21 hours of battery life, you can rest assured it'll last longer than your typical gaming laptop.

With a 1440p screen and a 16:10 screen ratio, the LG gram is simply phenomenal for video editing and has plenty of hardware grunt to handle Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and a slew of software all at once.

There are more powerful laptops in the LG gram roster, with prices climbing as high as £1,800, but we think that this model strikes a perfect balance of power and value, making it our favourite of the bunch.

Pros

  • Excellent hardware
  • Gorgeous minimalist design
  • Ultra-lightweight build quality for weightless feel

Cons

  • Fairly expensive compared to other laptops with similar specifications

HP Envy 17-cw0009na 4K LaptopHP
Price: £1,199 (£1,499)

www.hp.com

Harder to find on the laptop market than you might expect, the HP Envy 17-cw0009na 4K laptop is one of the few 17-inch 4K laptops on the market at its price range, and is it ever worth it. Big, bold and crisp visuals paired with dual speakers designed by the ever-brilliant Bang and Olufsen, the HP Envy 17 brings a cinematic experience to your lap, and that's understating things.

As for performance, you won't be disappointed by the HP Envy 17: this 17-inch laptop is packed with cutting-edge hardware, including an RTX 3050 GPU, as well as an i7 CPU and 16GB of RAM, culminating in one of the smoothest user experiences of the year.

A great laptop for photo editing on account of its performance and its stunning 4K detail, the HP Envy 17 is astonishing, but it certainly has a price tag to reflect its brilliance. At over £1,200, it's certainly not cheap, and when compared to non-4K laptops, at a similar price, you can expect a whole lot more performance.

If you're looking for a portable 4K laptop with a gorgeous design and solid performance, however, you really aren't going to find anything better on the market, the HP Envy 17 is easily one of the best laptops of the year, and almost certainly the best 17-inch 4K laptop you'll find anywhere.

Pros

  • Gorgeous 4K display
  • Excellent sound quality
  • Great performance

Cons

  • Fairly expensive compared to others with better performance

Best 17-inch laptop for students

Ideal for students looking to get the most out of their laptops, the HP 17-cn2500sa 17-inch laptop is the perfect hardy laptop, built to endure hours of use without breaking a sweat. Solid battery life to ensure nothing is missed during lectures, along with a solid 128GB SSD, which is plenty for storing copious amounts of reading materials and essays.

If you're looking to do something a little more ambitious with your HP 17-cn2500sa laptop, however, you're out of luck. The Intel i3 CPU, paired with a standard 8GB of RAM isn't going to get you far with demanding software, for that you should look at laptops under £1,000. But for those who just need something reliable to get notes down that'll last long days, and take the potential knocks and drops you might expect on a busy campus.

Intuitively designed, with an especially eye-catching 17-inch screen, the HP 17 laptop is a remarkably affordable device worth investing in, especially at its current low price.

Pros

  • Good design
  • Decent battery life
  • Good ports for strong device connectivity

Cons

  • Fairly standard performance

Best 17-inch laptop under £600

A terrific laptop for winding down in the evenings or typing up a storm - the Acer Aspire 3 laptop has a huge amount of storage despite its price, making it ideal for huge projects.

Despite it not being the most powerful laptop on the market in terms of its hardware, it's still suitable for those in search of a reliable laptop that'll last a long time, in large part thanks to its sturdy design and good decent hardware.

That isn't to say that the Acer Aspire 3 isn't flawed, and one of its biggest strengths is simultaneously one of its worst flaws. Its 1TB of storage is great, but with HDD technology - it can feel particularly slow for a modern laptop.

All in all, the Acer Aspire 3 is a reliable laptop that's a fraction of the cost of other 17-inch laptops on the market - it's reliable, powerful, and cheap, despite its slightly slow HDD storage technology.

Pros

  • Good value full HD 17-inch screen
  • Plenty of storage
  • Solid battery life

Cons

  • Disappointing HDD storage

Cons

  • Fairly standard RAM

Best 17-inch Chromebook

For those who want to streamline their work experience, opt for the ASUS Laptop Chromebook CX1700CKA. The Intel Pentium N6000 processor confidentially runs a large sum of windows, tabs, and programs at once, so you won't be noticeably slowed down.

It isn't just the processor that keeps things running smoothly, as thanks to the anti-glare display, you won't have to juggle your seating placement just because the sun has decided to become a bother.

The main weakness of the Intel Pentium N6000 is its storage capacity. A total of 12GB is only average, but don't let it be a deal breaker for it being a work laptop; you may just need to partner it up with an external hard drive if you want to download and store large files.

Be that as it may, the ASUS Chromebook is ideal for those on a tight budget, delivering decent performance in a visually appealing design.

Pros

  • Slim design is ideal for portability
  • Fantastic value
  • Great HD+ screen

Cons

  • Fairly weak performance

FAQs: your questions answered

What laptop size is the best?

The most common laptop size is typically about 15 inches, and that works for just about every task. Whatever it is you require from your laptop, a 15-inch model will have you covered.

So why opt for a 17-inch laptop? Well, the increased screen size is the obvious plus point, providing you with extra space to really bring out the best visuals for watching shows or playing games. Being a bit bigger also means that these models can pack a bit of extra battery life. It's worth noting, though, that you will have a slightly heavier laptop, so easy portability is a trade-off. Essentially, a 17-inch laptop is perfect for those who mainly want to use their laptop at home.

Are 17-inch laptops good for gaming?

If you plan on gaming often with your laptop, then you should opt for a dedicated gaming laptop. But as for 17-inch laptops in general, they are quite good for gaming. The increased screen size over most standard models gives you a bit of extra freedom to adjust the resolution and UI of your games. In fact, you could even pair the laptop up with a small monitor and reap the benefits of having multiple screens.
