The best waterproof speakers

There was once a time when a waterproof speaker meant a small, tinny radio shower. Happily, thanks to some hard work by product and speaker masterminds, this is no longer the case. Waterproof speakers are now not simply waterproof, but they sound incredible, are portable and are loaded with Bluetooth connectivity – making them ideal for barbecues, picnics, beach trips, days relaxing by the pool or just providing some entertainment in the shower. Even if you don’t intend on getting wet, the protection offers fantastic peace of mind.

Whatever your intended use, we’ve put together a buyer’s guide to help you select the right waterproof portable speaker.

A quick note:

All of the items in this list are rated IPX7 – this is the mark by which industry folk identify items as fully waterproof. There is a FAQs at the bottom of this page that’ll tell you all about IPX rating, but IPX7 means an item can be submerged in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. For the purposes of a speaker, this is more than adequate protection. On some devices, the “X” is replaced with a number – this refers to dirt protection; 6 will protect from dirt and dust ingress.

Unless otherwise stated, all items included here are rechargeable. They can also all be linked to further speaker devices to create bigger party systems using manufacture’s apps, unless otherwise indicated

FAQs

What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a method of carrying information over short distance, short-wave radio signals. Initially a relatively slow process, Bluetooth has developed into the ubiquitous method for transferring music information between devices - challenged in it's quality and usability only by Wi-Fi.

What is an IP rating? What does IPX7, or IP67 even mean?

The IP (International Protection Marking) is an industry classification of a products protection. The first digit, sometimes marked with an “X” when unclassified, refers to the solid particle protection, while the second digit refers to liquid protection.

For example, if an item has a rating of IPX7, we know that it is unclassified for particle ingress, but has a liquid protection rating of 7. If the item was labelled IP67, we would know that the item has a particle protection rating or 6, and a liquid protection rating of 7. But what do these numbers mean in the real world? Here is a short technical explanation of the codes.

FIRST DIGIT: SOLID PARTICLE PROTECTION

X – NA - X means there is no data available to specify a protection rating.

0 – None - No protection against contact and ingress of objects.

1 - >50 mm – Protected from any large surface of the body, such as the back of a hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with a body parts.

2 - >12.5 mm – Protected from fingers or similar objects.

3 - >2.5 mm – Protected from tools, thick wires, etc.

4 - >1 mm – Protected from most wires, slender screws, large ants etc.

5 - Dust protected - Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.

6 - Dust tight - No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). A vacuum must be applied. Test duration of up to 8 hours based on air flow.

SECOND DIGIT: LIQUID INGRESS PROTECTION

X – NA - X means there is no data available to specify a protection rating.

0 – None - No protection against contact and ingress of liquid.

1 - Dripping water - Dripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have no harmful effect on the specimen when mounted in an upright position onto a turntable and rotated at 1 RPM. Tested for 10 minutes, equivalent to 1 mm rainfall per minute.

2 - Dripping water when tilted at 15° - Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted at an angle of 15° from its normal position. Water equivalent to 3 mm rainfall per minute.

3 - Spraying water - Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical shall have no harmful effect.

4 – Splashing of water - Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect.

5 - Water jets - Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.

6 - Powerful water jets - Water projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.

6K - Powerful water jets with increased pressure - Water projected in powerful jets (6.3 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction, under elevated pressure, shall have no harmful effects.

Ratings beyond this point are considered waterproof.

7 - Immersion, up to 1 m depth - Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m submersion).

8 - Immersion, 1 m or more depth - The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects. The test depth and duration is expected to be greater than the requirements for IPx7, and other environmental effects may be added, such as temperature cycling before immersion.
