With the Xbox Series X and PS5 reaching upwards of 120fps on certain games, most standard 4K or full-HD TVs don't stand a chance of keeping up. Screen tearing and input lag are just a few of the issues you're likely to run into if you don't have one of the best TVs to handle the next generation of consoles.

Aside from getting that peak performance while gaming, having a stunning 4K TV to experience the latest jaw-dropping games like Starfield, Diablo 4, or Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, is an absolute must. Ultra crisp visuals at up to 120fps, deep, brilliant colour and tear-inducing contrast all on a TV with minimal input lag to give you the best precision available are just a few reasons to consider picking yourself up a 4K gaming TV.

Best TV for gaming 2023

Easily one of the best gaming televisions ever made, LG's C2 OLED TV dominates the competition when it comes to ultra-smooth, rapid-response gaming at a competitive price. With a response rate of just 0.1ms (compared to the 5 or 6ms response times of typical gaming televisions) there isn't a gaming television on the market that can offer quite the same sheer smoothness of LG's C2.

Just one look at its razor-thin screen is enough to rock any tech enthusiast to their very core - the build quality and overall design of the C2 is nothing short of sensational.

Combined with great sound (as assisted by Dolby Atmos), LG's C2 brings a gaming experience like no other, it's just that brilliant. As with even the best OLED TVs, however, OLED somewhat lags behind its QLED TV counterpart in terms of sheer screen brilliance.

Yes, the black tones of OLED look shockingly real, with shadows particularly popping - but they consistently struggle to attain the sheer brightness of QLED, and so lighter tones sometimes are lacking - but the screen itself still looks excellent.

Pros

  • Unbeatable gaming
  • Excellent depth
  • Gorgeous razor-thin design

Cons

  • Dimmer OLED screen

Best Neo-QLED TV of 2023

It wouldn't be a list of the best gaming smart TVs without acknowledging Samsung's excellent QN90B smart TV which has shaken the QLED market as we know it. This excellent QLED TV has taken the gaming world by storm by making the impossible, possible; they've made a sublime Neo-QLED smart TV under £1,000 that runs at 120 Hz.

Our major gripes with QLED technology over the years have been related in particular to its limited gaming capabilities. The use of a backlight (as opposed to OLED TV's self-lit LED technology) caused issues for 4K response times, dragging down that refresh rate a lot of the time - until recently, that is.

The QN90B is a gaming smart TV through and through, from its magnificent Neural Quantum 4K processor which upscales visuals in real-time, to its plethora of options for audio and visual enhancement while gaming, with Samsung's Motion Xcelerator, and that highly sought-after GameView experience, giving you the best borderless gaming in any TV on the market.

Of course, we have to talk about the impeccable QLED screen which cannot be appreciated enough. With a peak brightness of up to 2,400 nits (compared to most OLED screens reaching around 700 nits), colours ooze off the screen in a gorgeous display of colour and true-to-life precision, unlike any QLED TV we've ever seen.

Pros

  • Great Neo QLED picture
  • Perfect for 120Hz gaming
  • Stunning brightness

Cons

  • Almost too bright on occasion

Best value gaming TV

Philip's 55-inch ultra-low budget television is simply phenomenal for the price - from its design to its quality and its impeccable screen supported by Dolby Vision, the fact that this excellent TV is under £500 is astonishing.

Despite its weaker 60Hz refresh rate, which is still perfectly smooth for most gamers in need of a television, Philips's 55PUS7906/12 absolutely nails gaming - especially when using its Ambilight functionality, which draws your eye into the game for a new height of immersion.

If you've spent a small fortune on acquiring a next-generation console and you simply don't have much room left in your budget for an OLED or QLED screen, this Philips smart television simply cannot be beaten on design and build quality for its sheer value.

Pros

  • Gorgeous screen for the price
  • Excellent Ambilight functionality
  • Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision support
  • Brilliant value

Cons

  • Not as smooth as 120Hz gaming TVs

Best gaming OLED TV under £1,000

LG's C1 OLED smart TV storms the competition with ease, delivering the pinnacle in LG OLED tech at a reasonable price. With a striking, ultra-thin design which is unbelievable to behold (let alone have in your home), alongside its minuscule bezels that give gaming a mesmerising borderless aesthetic. But it doesn't stop there; the LG C1 even has G-sync support that prevents screen tearing and input lag issues, which works extremely well on both gaming consoles and PC.

Let's talk about the visuals - and of course, you won't be disappointed. The C1's HDR10 Pro support alongside that all-important OLED tech creates some very striking colour contrasts while gaming or watching your favourite films and shows.

With OLED, dark tones are truly, truly dark (unlike QLED) which is essential for adding some depth to your screen's overall picture - LG's C1 is truly one of the best LG TVs ever made - let alone one of the best TVs of the year.

Pros

  • Excellent picture
  • Exciting 120Hz gameplay
  • Great sound
  • Good value OLED TV

Cons

  • Not very bright compared to QLED TV

Best high-end gaming TV

Our final selection is quite easily the priciest, yet most exciting TV to be released in quite a few years, Samsung's S95B is a brief glimpse into the future of 4K TVs, and it's pretty glorious. Can't decide on whether to get QLED or OLED? Why not both? You've read that correctly, the S95B is a combination of both QLED and OLED tech, meaning you get the vibrancy of QLED and the tonal contrast and speed of OLED.

With HDR10+ support, a plethora of gaming features such as Motion Xcelerator Turbo Plus (for those truly cutting-edge frame rates), AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, and a stunning 3D surround, this is quite easily one of the best TVs of the year.

Gaming is nothing if not smooth with the S95B - easily powering through silky 120Hz gameplay that's simply perfect for the next generation of consoles. If you're in dire need of a terrific smart television worthy of breaking your budget range - this highly future-proofed Samsung QD OLED TV is definitely a great choice.

Pros

  • Fantastic picture quality
  • Innovative QD OLED technology
  • Ultra-slim design

Cons

  • No Dolby Vision

Best 65-inch gaming TV under £800

One of the best budget television brands for excellent 4K televisions at ultra-low prices, Hisense has released a staggeringly brilliant 120Hz 65-inch television for less than £800, and it's taken budget gamers by storm.

The Hisense 65U7HQTUK 4K TV is exceptionally brilliant amongst the ocean of smart televisions this year as one of the most reasonably priced high-powered gaming televisions available anywhere. Silky smooth gameplay, a gorgeous design and Hisense's ULED technology culminate in what is one of the best gaming televisions we've ever laid our eyes on.

As for picture quality, the 65U7HQTUK leaves something to be desired in terms of brightness. Reaching a peak brightness of 600 nits, much like standard OLED TVs, darker tones look fantastic, but this budget television can't quite capture the blinding brilliance of a 2,000 nit QLED television, but that's to be expected at its price point.

Pros

  • Terrific value
  • Excellent size
  • Solid 4K picture quality
  • Best price for 120Hz TV

Cons

  • Slightly dim compared

What's refresh rate and why is it so important for gaming?

Refresh rate simply refers to the number of times per second a screen can produce a new image, a 60Hz screen, for example, produces 60 new images per second.

It's incredibly important for gaming that a screen has a high enough refresh rate to run, any lower than 60Hz can typically lead to gameplay that looks and feels choppy, which isn't going to be much fun to deal with. So, as a general rule of thumb; the higher the refresh rate, the smoother the gameplay - simple.

If you're not much of a console player, then you'll probably be a lot more interested in the best gaming monitors, giving you top-tier performance at 4K resolution.

What's OLED?

OLED, or (Organic Light Emitting Diode) refers to the tiny diodes that make up a TVs screen, an OLED screen has the unique ability to light itself, no backlight required, meaning there is a minute delay between the screen's input and output, which of course is the best for gaming!

Looking for the best response times, the sharpest picture quality, and the most stunning contrast in your smart TV? Here's the best OLED TVs available this year.

What's QLED?

QLED stands for (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode), they use these special phosphorescent crystals that have a much better colour range than a standard LED, giving you a super bright and colourful screen. The only downside? QLED still needs a backlight, so response times are often slower, so if you want a high refresh rate you'll have to pay a fair bit more than usual.

For a bit more information on the entire QLED phenomenon, check out our comprehensive guide; What is QLED?

What's the best? QLED or OLED?

We know it's cliché, but it really is up to your personal preference and what you plan on using it for. If you're looking for the best gaming experience, an OLED typically delivers faster response times than QLED, whereas QLED looks far more eye-catching and bright, so if you're a film buff you might prefer that QLED screen.

What's FreeSync / G-Sync?

This is a feature that you'll mostly find on monitors for PCs, but it's definitely becoming more commonplace on TVs due to the newfound heft of the next-gen consoles. FreeSync or G-Sync are specialised sync technologies that prevent screen tearing while gaming, which can be a problem at high frame rates. FreeSync and G-Sync are each made by different companies, FreeSync being AMD, and G-Sync is NVIDIA.

What's framerate (or fps)?

Framerate is a simple measurement of the frequency that an image is displayed. At 60fps, 60 images are displayed per second, at 120fps, 120 images are displayed per second. But why is this important? It's because the higher the frequency, the smoother the gameplay, giving you a bit of a competitive edge in multiplayer games where controls feel smoother.

Which HDMI port is the best for gaming on TV?

This for us is an absolute no-brainer, it's the HDMI 2.1. HDMI 2.1 is the fastest output on your TV period. It's designed for that ultra-high speed, low latency connection to your devices so you get no input lag whatsoever.

They're a good size, they're affordable, and they look amazing, here's the best 43-inch smart TVs of the year.

So, which games support 120fps?
