Microsoft has applied to trademark ‘Xbox Series’, giving further credence to the online rumours surrounding a second Xbox Series console. WindowsCentral uncovered an application that was submitted by Microsoft to the US Patent & Trademark Office, applying to trademark the name ‘Xbox Series’.

This application, which sees the ‘X’ removed from already announced next-gen console, the Xbox Series X, has added more evidence to the rumours surrounding a cheaper, lower-spec, digital-only next-generation console, known online as Project Lockhart. This discovery comes less than a week after a user on Twitter posted lines of code from Windows’ System 32 OS, which clearly show code relating to a ‘Project Lockhart’. Microsoft has always denied the existence of the project.

Such speculation is not unwarranted. The Xbox One S All-Digital was released in May 2019, offering gamers the chance to access to Xbox catalogue for under £200.

Sony has recently revealed that it will be launching two PlayStation 5 consoles this holiday season, with the PS5 Digital Edition accompanying the regular, physical-media console when they reach stores later this year. Sony’s announcement, the cloud-based Google Stadia, and the long-rumoured Project Lockhart, have inspired a debate in the gaming world surrounding the future of physical media.

The next Xbox Series X event will be held in July, and we’ll likely get a glimpse at some more gaming content.
