Xbox Project Lockhart

Rumours surrounding this project have been following Microsoft around for a while. However, a Twitter user has posted a screenshot of some Windows OS code which makes direct reference to ‘Xbox-Lockhart’. The tweet, posted by user TitleOS and initially seen by IGN, suggests that whatever Project Lockhart may be, it is certainly linked with the Xbox system.

While Microsoft has maintained silence over the matter, the internet has been more than capable of filling the void with well-informed and logical speculation. Most believe that Project Lockhart is to be the Xbox Series X equivalent of the Xbox One S; a stripped back digital-only console that retails at a lower price point. While Microsoft has always refused to comment on the project’s existence, this latest development seems to give more weight to the speculation.

Project Lockhart has been a rumour for years, sitting alongside Project Scarlett in online discussions and online rumour mills. When Microsoft announced in June 2019 that Project Scarlett was in fact the new console, the Xbox Series X, many anticipated that Lockhart announcements would follow. This hasn’t happened. However, if Lockhart is indeed a cheaper console, it would make sense for Microsoft to hold off on its reveal to avoid impacting Series X sales this coming holiday.
