Unmetal is an unashamed spoof on the early days of Kojima’s Metal Gear series - complete with pixel graphics, a gruff protagonist and none-too-intelligent guards. The 2D top-down style is a callback to the first appearance of Metal Gear in 1987 and its later Game Boy Colour appearance in 2000. According to Versus Evil, Konami’s run-and-gun classic Contra (1987) is also a notable influence on the title.

The game has players take control of Jesse Fox, a soldier imprisoned in a covert military compound. There’s a secret plot to uncover, improvised weapons to master and stealth mechanics to master. In the spirit of spoof, each of these concepts has its own dry and sarcastic twist. Plus a little wry commentary.

A free demo is currently available to download on Steam.
