A more complex video game experience will soon be available on the Apple iPad, thanks to a new Game Controller framework. This announcement was made in a WWDC 2020 session. In an overview posted on Apple Developer site, the company states:

“Level up your iPad games and add in keyboard, mouse, and trackpad controls. Discover how to use the Game Controller framework to augment your existing titles, bring over games from other platforms, or dream up entirely new interaction experiences.”

This framework will allow keyboard, mouse, and trackpad controls to be used during gameplay, adding to the pre-existing PS4 DualShock and Xbox One controller compatibility. This highlights Apple’s interest in widening its narrow gaming output, despite the popularity of mobile versions of Fortnite, Minecraft, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, and legacy GTA titles.

All being well, this support should arrive as part of the iOS 14 update, which is currently due to launch in the autumn. This new iOS promises to be extensive, bringing a new look to the Apple experience. Amongst a long list of other changes, the Californian-innovator’s update will be offering greater widget and app control, a simplified UI, improved Siri functions, improved accessibility, and new route and guide features to Apple Maps.
