Does your old mattress need a new lease of life? Do you wake up with pain in your back, or struggle to get to sleep at night?

While we can't all afford a new mattress at the drop of a hat, mattress toppers exist to tide us over until that time comes, and to make your mattress more suited to your preferences.

What's more, they're also useful for guest bedrooms that aren't used that often, so don't warrant an expensive purchase.

While they're relatively affordable, you can pay a lot for what is essentially a cheap piece of foam in a cover. You might be tempted to steer clear of retailers like Amazon, but we're here to show you that you don't have to. There are plenty of high-quality products just waiting for your perusal, even in the AmazonBasics range.

I selected this mattress topper because it won't break the bank, has great reviews and looks high quality. When it arrived, it was rolled in a plastic bag and needed a few hours to puff up properly. I left it for a few days to ensure I got the full effect.

The cover feels really well-made, although the zip was particularly difficult to work with as it tends to get stuck on the material inside - nothing a bit of elbow grease didn't solve, though.

I have an older mattress on one of the spare beds, which, while not uncomfortable, has seen better days. If you lie a certain way, you can feel the springs beneath you, but at this point, it isn't worth replacing the whole thing as it's only used a few times a year.

Description

This product is a quilted memory-foam topper which will fit a double bed perfectly, and the material allows airflow to prevent heat build-up. It also has a Medicover-treated cover that provides protection against dust mites and bacteria.

Core:

100% memory-foam filling with a structured surface

Cover:

Sides: 100% Polyester

Top: 62% Polyester 38% Cotton

First off, I tested the bed without the topper, lying in different positions to ensure the test was thorough. Then, I added the mattress topper and was immediately met with a soft and luxurious change, whichever position I lay in.

It's very soft, so won't be suited to those who like a firmer mattress, but I can no longer feel the springs from the mattress in my back, so it does the job nicely. It won't totally transform your mattress - but I doubt there's a mattress topper out there that can do that without costing you an arm and a leg.

What's more, ever since I've made the bed, I can't keep the previously uninterested dog off it - so take that as you will.

Conclusion

If you're searching for a mattress topper that's affordable, can be quickly delivered and is great quality, look no further. While it will never be a substitute for a brand new mattress, it's a great stop-gap for spare bedrooms or for those with an overly firm mattress. I can't wait for our guests to try it out when the time comes.
