As February is the month of love, don't forget about the most important kind – self-love. And self-love is all about pampering, making yourself feel great by hitting up the gym, and prioritising relaxation and recovery afterwards. Whether you're gearing up to embrace a new sport, fine-tuning expertise or only just using your gym membership for the first time, ensuring proper recovery time is the key to unlocking your full potential. Plus, recovery is even more important during the dark winter months – you have the icy conditions and early dark nights to thank for that.

But, as you embark on your quest for greatness, Whole Supp has created a helpful superfood meal shake to add to your routine.

What is Whole Supp?

In short, Whole Supp is a superfood meal shake. Think of it as similar to a protein shake, but with some slight differences. Made with a whopping 13 plant-based ingredients, Whole Supp shakes aim to speed up the post-workout recovery process and have more energy throughout the day. All while keeping you feeling full for around four to six hours. How is that possible, you might wonder? Dr Brian Carlson is Whole Supp's formulator and Head of Science and Innovation, and he explains how one meal shake a day can help boost your energy levels.

"There are several bioactive nutrients included in our formulation which have been proven to have an influence on exercise performance, including the nitrate content of our beetroot, cherry and spinach extracts," he says. "In addition, our unique vitamin and mineral formulation can support active lifestyles with key B vitamins and minerals like iron being necessary for maintaining performance in the short and long term."

Continually, the superfood meal shakes are all gluten-free and contain prebiotics, ensuring a gentle experience on the stomach – even pre-workout. In fact, British and Irish Lions Captain Sam Warbuton has even been caught raving about his morning beverage with no dodgy side effects. He says: "Whole Supp, water, ice cubes and blend it up and it tastes fantastic, and reassuring knowing you’re getting so much goodness at the same time. Also, no negative gastrointestinal side effects."

A guide to Whole Supp meal shakes

What makes Whole Supp different?

It doesn't go unnoticed that the market is saturated with meal shakes, all of which claim to be 'healthy.' The main thing that sets Whole Supp apart is its Informed Sports certification, which gives professional athletes the confidence to incorporate into their diets without worry. Also, Whole Supp shakes are designed to combat oxidative stress and aid in faster recovery, so you don't have to be in pain the days after a big gym session.

In addition, Whole Supp doesn't just stop at performance. Taste is king. And they've nailed the flavour game, sparing you from the fake tastes and gritty textures that plague other meal shakes.

Whole Supp is also committed to sustainability. Their packaging is not only recyclable but also plastic-free and home-compostable – which we think is brilliant. Kate Jayden, ultra-runner and Team GB Tri athlete thinks so too: "I love that the packaging is plastic-free and home compostable," she says. "Incredible product that helps me get meals in on the go our after late night run."

What is the difference between a protein shake and a meal shake?

A meal shake is not to be confused with a protein shake. A meal shake packs a heavier calorific punch (usually around 400 calories, compared to a protein shake of 120-250 calories) but also comes with various other nutrients. The idea of a meal shake is to make you feel full and energised, which is why many triathletes prefer a meal shake over a protein shake – to pack in a formidable calorie intake.

What are the ingredients in a Whole Supp shake?

The meal shakes offer a powerhouse blend of ingredients, like red sea algae, Montmorency cherry powder, broccoli, beetroot juice powder, pea protein, rice protein and ground oats. Let's not forget the healthy fats from sunflower flaxseed, coconut, and MTC oil, too.

From antioxidants to electrolytes, this meal shake does have it all. Plus, with two flavours – rich chocolate or creamy vanilla – and a limited edition salted caramel on the horizon, there's now a tasty way to fuel your body.
