HTC Taiwan has posted a ‘save the date’ to its Facebook page, seeming to tease the launch of a new smartphone. The event will take place on June 16, and likely be an online event due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

While there’s been no additional information provided, aside from the date and a shrouded smartphone image, many are speculating that the announcement will the long-awaited HTC Desire Pro 20. It had been rumoured that HTC may be releasing its first 5G smartphone, as the company is already accustomed to the tech through their 5G router range. The posted teaser image seems to have dispelled this thought.

Despite being a big name on the smartphone market in the early-2000s, the company has failed to keep its market share with the rise of Samsung, Google and Huawei, and newcomer-midrange offerings from Xiaomi.

How much of an impact this new device will make is up for debate. Early leaks and rumours seem to suggest that the smartphone will launch with specs that were considered midrange in 2019. While it would be nice to see HTC making some waves in the industry once more, the new device is unlikely to make it into any best smartphones of 2020 list.

What else has HTC been up to?

HTC Vive

A few years ago HTC found some success with its Vive VR headset, which resulted from a collaboration with Valve. However, with Valve launching the extremely powerful Valve Index VR headset earlier this year, we have yet to see whether HTC can keep pace with new offerings. Maybe here too, just like its early smartphone endeavours, the company will be left as an early innovator, rather than a progressive and boundary-pushing market-leader.
