Add Alexa to your car with the Echo Auto

Amazon has released the Echo Auto in the UK and Ireland. Originally launched in the US in 2018, the in-car device mounts on an air vent and links up to a car’s Bluetooth or 3.5mm jack audio to deliver all of the expected Alexa skills and abilities.

In anticipation of all car-based noises (road noise, air con, radio, loud kids), the Echo Auto holds an eight microphone array and far-field technology to ensure that voice commands are heard clearly. It’s powered by a USB or 12V power socket, and the internet connection is established using a connected smartphone (so those with limited data plans, take care).

The Echo Auto is available for £49.99 from Amazon UK. Click here to see the deal.

Much like the Echo Input, the Echo Auto is a device that allows Alexa to be added to pre-existing, non-smart equipment – in this case, a car.

Bringing Alexa out onto the open road will allow you to control the Alexa phone app via voice command, and play streamed content from the likes of Prime Music, Spotify, and Deezer, over the car stereo. It’ll also allow access to local radio stations via TuneIn, and up-to-the-minute news bulletins and weather reports on demand.

As with all Echo and Alexa devices, the Echo Auto will also allow you to manage and create calendar entries and set reminders. If you’re someone who tends to remember key details or have genius ideas as sit at waiting at traffic lights, the ability to conveniently record and store these important thoughts and dates is going to be a real attraction.

Like all Alexa devices, there’s a privacy feature which can electronically deactivate the microphones.

Due to the Echo Auto being a vent-mounted device, you’ll want to make sure that the mount is compatible with your vehicle. Amazon has included a visual guide on the product page to help you with this.
