The arrival of the Apple iPhone 12 will soon be one step closer, as later this month production will begin on the all-new A14 processor, according to rumours heard by Cult Of Mac. The processor will be manufactured in Taiwan by TSMC.

According to a Digitimes report (paywalled, but seen by MacRumours), the A14 will include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X60 5G Modem. This will make the Apple iPhone 12 the first iPhone to be 5G compatible, allowing users to take advantage of the modem’s “tightly integrated, intelligent modem-RF system [that] features an arsenal of advanced technologies designed to deliver cutting-edge data speeds, latency, coverage and battery life.”

What else can the Apple A14 chip do?

In addition to allowing 5G connections, the A14 is said to be the first smartphone processor based on ARM architecture to exceed 3GHz. The iPhone 11’s A13 chip runs at a frequency of 2.7GHz.

When will the iPhone 12 be launched?

Though Apple’s schedule has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, a 2020 arrival date is still on the table. The A14 chip production supports this notion, though arrival-date predictions still vary. Cult Of Mac has stated that the iPhone 12 will be shipping in September, whereas Pocket Lint has reported that an October date is more likely. At this point, all we have is speculation.
