Amazon takes on Fitbit with the new Halo View, an affordable fitness tracker

Fitbit has set the pace for everyday fitness tracking, will Amazon’s new device take over or be left in the dust?

Amazon Halo View

The Halo View is a new fitness tracker from Amazon. The wrist-bound gadget was revealed at its 2021 event, alongside a host of other products and tech. While the Halo range is not new, the Halo View is the first to take clear aim at Fitbit’s corner of the market.

While specific prices and dates are yet to be announced, the Halo View is slated to “ship in time for the holidays” and will likely retail around $79 (roughly £60). The price is particularly interesting here because if the watch makes it to the UK, it will be around £30 cheaper than the Fitbit Inspire 2. Note that UK dates and releases have not yet been mentioned… at all.

Here’s what we know about the Halo View so far:

• Features an AMOLED colour display with haptics, offering “at-a-glance” feedback on body metrics (such as heart rate, steps, calories burned)

• Tracks workouts, sleep, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, skin temperate and more using optical sensors and an accelerometer (no GPS, though)

• Seven-day battery life, with full charge in 90 minutes

• Swim-proof

• Available in black, green and lavender - additional bands available

• Available in small/medium and medium/large

• US retail of $79, so around £58 to £60

These specs are pretty solid, lining up for the most part with what is offered by the hugely popular Fitbit Inspire 2, which retails for £89.99. Given that this model alone has sold over 29,000 units on the Amazon UK site alone, it’s no wonder that the retailer wants to try its own hand at the tech. It seems reasonable to speculate that, if the Halo View is a success, we may see Amazon extend the range with a fitness-tracking smartwatch, akin to the Fitbit Versa 2, a device retailing for £199.99 and selling well over 100,000 units.

Halo Fitness and Halo Nutrition

As with all things Amazon, when you purchase the Halo View you get more than just the fitness tracker. Each fitness tracker is bundled with a years subscription to Halo Fitness, a new membership service that offers “hundreds of studio-quality workouts from trusted industry experts and coaches, and real-time individual workout metrics from Halo devices”. These workouts span yoga, cardio, strength and mobility, and Amazon state that new content will release regularly.

For the die-hard fitness fan, Amazon is rolling out another membership service - Halo Nutrition. This subscription service, which will cost $3.99 p/m, provides recipes and food advice, including personalised food plans. There are over 500 recipes said to be included, and the ingredients can be directly ordered through Amazon and its grocery partners (which in the US includes Whole Foods). It’s also not yet clear how (or if) the service will link with Amazon UK’s groceries.

We’ll keep you updated with Amazon Halo View news in the UK, and point you to preorder when and where available.
