Reasons for using a face mask:

According to GOV.UK, “Coronavirus (COVID-19) usually spreads by droplets from coughs, sneezes and speaking. These droplets can also be picked up from surfaces, if you touch a surface and then your face without washing your hands first. This is why social distancing, regular hand hygiene, and covering coughs and sneezes is so important in controlling the spread of the virus.

“The best available scientific evidence is that, when used correctly, wearing a face covering may reduce the spread of coronavirus droplets in certain circumstances, helping to protect others.”

What types of face masks are there?

Deciding what face mask is right for you is difficult, especially when there are so many available online and in shops. Not sure what is the best face mask for coronavirus protection and what each type does? Lucky for you, here’s everything you need to know.

Respirators: These types of face masks are mostly used by healthcare professionals as they filter out particles as you breathe. Devices are often designed to be tighter and protect against inhaling dangerous fumes and gases.

Surgical masks: Another type of mask that is intended to be worn by healthcare staff; these are made to shape your nose with a metal strip.

Cloth masks: In order to ensure there are plenty of respirator and surgical masks for healthcare workers, a cloth mask is an alternative that can be washed and used again after every use.

How effective are face masks?

A study from Oxford’s Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science around face masks and coverings shows that some options aren’t as effective as others. For example - loosely woven fabrics, such as scarves, have been shown to be the least effective.

Professor Melinda Mills, Director of the Leverhulme Centre and author of the study, says, “Attention must also be placed on how well it fits on the face; it should loop around the ears or around the back of the neck for better coverage.

She insists, "The general public does not need to wear surgical masks or respirators. We find that masks made from high quality material such as high-grade cotton, multiple layers and particularly hybrid constructions are effective. For instance, combining cotton and silk or flannel provide over 95% filtration, so wearing a mask can protect others."

It’s important to remember that face masks do not guarantee that you will not catch COVID-19. That’s why it is essential that you continue to social distance and regularly wash your hands. As soon as you have removed your mask, wash your hands immediately before touching your face or any other surfaces.

Please remember if you do experience any COVID-19 symptoms, you and your household must isolate at home and you should arrange to have a test.
